The short answer

Free Smallpdf alternative: OneClickPDF does the everyday Smallpdf jobs (compress, merge, split, sign, redact, edit text, OCR) free, with no daily download limit and no account. Most tools open your PDF in your browser, so it isn't uploaded. Smallpdf's free plan limits downloads; Pro (7-day free trial) removes the limit and adds apps and signature requests.

Smallpdf is a polished Swiss PDF suite with 40+ tools, a mobile app and e-signatures through Sign.com. Its free plan lets you use the tools but caps how many documents you can download a day, and keeps Edit Text, Strong Compression and unlimited AI for Pro. If you mostly need quick, one-off PDF jobs without a limit or an upload, that is the gap OneClickPDF fills.

When to pick Smallpdf instead

Pick Smallpdf if…

  • You send documents for other people to sign and want to track them: Smallpdf Pro includes a Sign.com Premium subscription. OneClickPDF signs your own copy only.
  • You want a Windows or phone app, cloud storage for your files, or batch compress and convert in one go.
  • Your team needs one bill and member management (Smallpdf's Team and Business plans).

Why pick OneClickPDF

  • No daily, hourly or download limit on the free tools, and no account.
  • Most tools open the PDF in your browser, so it isn't uploaded; the few that use a server say so on their page.
  • Edit PDF changes a PDF's own text in place, free (Chinese, Japanese, Korean and right-to-left text can't be edited yet).
  • Redaction, OCR in 16 languages, PDF comparison, Bates numbering and N-up, all free.
  • The few paid tools are $0.99 each time, with no subscription.
  • Tools you've used before keep working offline (a tool you haven't used yet needs a connection the first time; the server tools always do)

Why people look for a Smallpdf alternative

  • The free plan has a daily download limit on most tools; Smallpdf's pricing page doesn't say how many.
  • Edit Text, Strong Compression, batch processing and OCR inside PDF to Word, Excel and PowerPoint are Pro features.
  • AI tools are limited on the free plan (documents up to 25–35k words, 50 MB).
  • Files are uploaded to Smallpdf to be processed (sent over TLS, Smallpdf says).

Smallpdf is easy to use and does a lot: 40+ tools, a phone app, a Windows app, AI tools and e-signature requests. The catch on the free plan is the daily download limit, which Smallpdf applies to most tools without publishing the number, and the features it keeps for Pro: editing text, its strongest compression, OCR inside Office conversions and batch work.

OneClickPDF takes a different route. Most of its tools run on your own device: the PDF is opened in your browser, changed there, and downloaded, so there is nothing to upload and no per-file cost for us, which is why those tools are free with no limit. The few tools that need a server (Office to PDF, PDF to Word, Webpage to PDF, Translate and the AI tools) say so on their page.

If you need signature requests, a desktop app or team billing, Smallpdf Pro is the better buy. If you need to compress, merge, split, sign, redact or edit a PDF now, without a limit or an upload, OneClickPDF does it free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free alternative to Smallpdf with no daily limit?
Yes. OneClickPDF's free tools (compress, merge, split, sign, redact, edit, OCR and more) have no daily, hourly or download limit and need no account. Most of them run in your browser, so the PDF isn't uploaded.
Is Smallpdf free?
Partly. Smallpdf's free plan gives access to its tools with a daily download limit on most of them (the pricing page doesn't give the number, as of October 2026). Pro removes the limit and adds Edit Text, Strong Compression, batch processing and unlimited AI, with a 7-day free trial.
Does Smallpdf upload my files?
Yes. Smallpdf is an online service: your file is uploaded and processed by Smallpdf, sent with TLS encryption. Most OneClickPDF tools (merge, split, compress, sign, redact, OCR, edit and the rest) open your file in your browser, so it isn't uploaded to us or anyone. The exceptions say so on their page: Word, Excel and PowerPoint to PDF upload the file to our converter, which deletes it after converting; PDF to Word sends it to Adobe; the AI tools and Translate send only the PDF's extracted text to Google Gemini; Webpage to PDF fetches the page through our server; and signing or scanning from a phone passes the image through our server for up to 10 minutes.
Is OneClickPDF really free?
Most tools are free, with no account, no daily or hourly limit and no watermark, and the tools that run in your browser have no file size cap. The paid ones are PDF to Word ($0.99 a document, Adobe's engine), the optional premium Office to PDF ($0.99 a document), Translate PDF (first page free, then $0.99 a document) and the AI day pass ($0.99 for 24 hours of Chat with PDF, Summarizer and Question Generator, with a fair-use allowance; Chat gives 3 free questions first). There is no subscription.
What does OneClickPDF do free that Smallpdf keeps for Pro?
Editing a PDF's own text, the strongest compression level and OCR without a daily limit are free on OneClickPDF. On Smallpdf, Edit Text and Strong Compression are Pro features, and the free OCR tool counts toward the daily download limit.
